How to get Khloe & Karter talking in Microsoft Edge on Windows.

⚡ Try these three first

  1. Click once anywhere on the page. Browsers block sound until you interact with a page, so the very first word may stay silent. Tap the 🔊 button again after clicking.
  2. Check the tab isn’t muted. A muted tab shows a crossed-out speaker. Right-click the tab and choose Unmute tab.
  3. Turn the volume up — both the speaker on your keyboard and the Windows volume icon by the clock.

🌐 Microsoft Edge settings

🔇 Fix it right on the arcade page (works most of the time)

This is the quickest fix, done straight from the site:

  1. Open the arcade in Edge.
  2. Click the padlock (or the icon just left of the web address).
  3. Click Site settings.
  4. In the settings search box at the top, type sound.
  5. Set Control if audio and video play automatically on sites to Allow.
  6. While you’re there, also set Sound to Allow if it appears.
  7. Go back to the arcade tab and reload the page.
Searching “sound” on the Site settings page brings both controls together — the autoplay one is what lets words read themselves aloud without you clicking first.
🎚️ Is sound switched off for all sites?

There’s a master switch that controls every website at once.

  1. Copy this into the address bar and press Enter: edge://settings/content/sound
  2. Make sure Allow sites to play sound is turned on.
  3. Scroll down to the Block list. If family-arcade.com is listed there, remove it using the three dots beside it.

You can reach the same place by hand: ⋯ menu → Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Sound.

▶️ Turn on autoplay for every site (not just the arcade)

Edge can stop pages from playing audio before you’ve clicked anything. That’s why a word may not read itself aloud when a card first opens, even though the 🔊 button works. The fix at the top of this page handles this for the arcade. To turn it on for all sites at once:

  1. Go to edge://settings/content/mediaAutoplay
  2. Set Control if audio and video play automatically on sites to Allow.
  3. Reload the arcade.
By hand: ⋯ menu → Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Media autoplay. On some managed or school computers this option is hidden — that’s normal, and pressing 🔊 yourself still works.
🔉 Is Edge turned down in the Windows volume mixer?

Windows keeps a separate volume for each app, and Edge can end up muted there on its own.

  1. Right-click the speaker icon next to the clock.
  2. Choose Open volume mixer.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge in the list and drag its slider up. Make sure it isn’t muted.

Edge must be playing something for it to appear in the mixer, so open the arcade and press 🔊 first.

🎧 Is the sound going to the wrong speakers?

If headphones, a monitor or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, Windows may be sending the sound somewhere you can’t hear.

  1. Click the speaker icon next to the clock.
  2. Click the > arrow beside the volume slider.
  3. Pick the speakers or headphones you’re actually using.

Edge can also send one tab somewhere different — check the speaker icon on the tab itself if the rest of Windows sounds fine.

🗣️ Spoken words and languages

🌏 Mandarin, Hindi or Latin stays silent, but English works

The Learning Quest asks Windows to speak each word. Windows can only do that for languages it has a voice installed for, and most computers ship with English only. Without the voice there’s simply nothing to play.

To add a voice:

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
  2. Click Add a language and pick the one you want — for example Chinese (Simplified, China) or Hindi (India).
  3. On the options screen, tick Text-to-speech before installing. This is the important box.
  4. Install, then restart Edge. The arcade picks the new voice up automatically.
You do not have to change your display language — installing the voice is enough. Latin has no Windows voice at all, so the arcade reads it with an Italian voice, which is very close.

Until a voice is installed, the game reads the pronunciation guide instead (for example “ni hao”) so children still hear how the word sounds.

🐢 The voice is too fast, too slow, or sounds wrong

Windows chooses the default voice and speed.

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Speech.
  2. Under Text-to-speech, pick a different Voice and drag the Speed slider.
  3. Use Preview voice to hear it, then restart Edge.
Voices whose names contain “Online (Natural)” sound the nicest but need a working internet connection. If your connection drops, they fail silently — the arcade now prefers the offline voices for that reason.
🎮 Game sound effects work but nothing is spoken

These are two different systems. Beeps and music are made by the game itself; spoken words come from Windows’ text-to-speech. If the beeps work, your speakers and Edge are fine — the problem is the voice.

  • Check a voice is installed for that language (see the Mandarin question above).
  • Open Settings → Time & language → Speech and press Preview voice. If that’s silent too, the problem is in Windows, not the arcade.
  • On a school or work laptop, an administrator may have removed the speech features. A home computer or tablet will usually work.

🧩 Still stuck?

🔁 Things worth trying in order
  1. Reload the page properly — hold Ctrl and press Shift+R.
  2. Close and reopen Edge. Newly installed voices don’t appear until it restarts.
  3. Restart the computer — this fixes most stuck audio.
  4. Try another browser such as Chrome. If sound works there, the problem is an Edge setting above.
  5. Try a phone or tablet. Remember to turn off the silent switch on an iPhone or iPad.
  6. Update Edge — edge://settings/help checks and installs updates.
📱 What about iPads, iPhones and Android?
  • iPhone / iPad: the physical silent switch (or Silent Mode in Control Centre) mutes web audio. Flip it off, then raise the volume while the arcade is open so you’re changing media volume rather than ringer volume.
  • Android: check the Media volume specifically — press the volume key, tap the arrow, and raise the media slider.
  • On both, tap the screen once before expecting anything to speak.
